Media Statement Regarding Recall Petition Approval

August 14, 2026

I am aware that the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk has approved a recall petition against me for circulation. The next step belongs to the petitioners: they now have four months to gather voter signatures in District 4.

I firmly believe the voters of District 4 will not stand for a recall framed around personal vendettas, organized by outside special interests. If this effort succeeds, PUSD could be forced to spend up to approximately $2 million on special election costs — dollars taken directly from teachers, programs, and the services our students rely on every day. A recall pursued at the expense of our students is not how we resolve our differences.

The allegations against me are unproven and simply untrue. Words have been taken out of context and narratives twisted to serve the political gain of a few powerful influencers outside of District 4 determined to protect their personal priorities at all costs. What I can say without question is this: from the day I took office, I have consistently and faithfully served District 4 to ensure that every student has access to the best educational opportunities possible, and I have never wavered from that mission.

I have supported public education in Pasadena for over 15 years — as a parent volunteer, PTA leader, and now as a Board member. In that time, I have made extremely difficult decisions to keep PUSD resilient in the face of the Eaton Fire, state and federal funding instability, and the declining enrollment affecting school districts across California. These challenges were not created by PUSD, but I have had the courage to stand up and do what it takes to deliver a consistent, excellent educational experience for every student, regardless.

I didn't step forward to serve because I expected this job to be easy. I stepped up because I believe with all my heart that doing what is right for all students is the calling of this office — and it’s what my constituents elected me to do.

Before signing any petition, I encourage every voter to learn the facts at hardenforpusd.com, where they can also connect with me directly to share their views and questions.
